Truly, "We are chosen to show Jesus to the world."

Our Story

Old Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1900 by Pastor Bine. The congregation held its first service under a bush arbor, marking the humble beginnings of a community that would grow and thrive for over a century.

In the early years, a small structure was built that also served as a schoolhouse. However, during the 1920s, the sanctuary was tragically destroyed by fire, leaving the congregation without a place of worship. Demonstrating their resilience and devotion, the members pooled together the little funds they had and rebuilt the church. While construction was underway, services were held at the Prince of Zion near the Helena community. By 1929, a new wooden structure was erected on a site known as "on the hill."

In 1942, Pastor C. L. Laster was sent by God to lead the church. He faithfully served as pastor for 47 years, until his retirement in 1989. Under his leadership, the church experienced significant growth and development. On October 25, 1957, a plot of land was purchased from the Havana Warehouse Company, and by 1958, construction of a new sanctuary was completed, with the first service held in the new building.

Over the years, Old Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church has been blessed with many exceptional leaders. Some of these include Pastor Lester, Pastor Turner, Pastor Killings, Pastor Ray, Pastor Kirk, Pastor Stewart, and Pastor Laster. In 1982, a youth ministry was established under the leadership of Minister James Youmas, followed by Minister Samuel Maxwell. Minister Jack P. Leland succeeded Maxwell as youth pastor in 1984 and later served as assistant pastor. He became interim pastor in 1989 and was appointed pastor in January 1990.

Following Pastor Leland, the church continued to be led by distinguished pastors, including Pastor O’Hara C. Black, Pastor William Mark Greene, Pastor Mark J. Wilkerson, and the current pastor, Pastor Roosevelt N. Rogers III. Pastor Rogers was appointed interim pastor for 6 months and now serves as the senior pastor. Under his leadership, the church has expanded significantly, purchasing 13 acres of land and undergoing major renovations, including upgrades to its digital systems, enabling the congregation to extend its reach and spread the Word globally.

The church has also nurtured the growth of several ministers, five of whom are currently serving: Elder Janice Harris, Minister Trina Richardson, Minister Demarien Hawk, Dr. Minister Katina Smith, and Minister Katrina Derico-Smith.  Additionally, the church has been supported by a dedicated team of deacons throughout the years, presently, Deacon Clinton Gurley, Sr. continues to serve.
